Health and Safety Manager

Overview

In this role you will lead the HSEQW team to uphold and evolve the ISO 45001 Safety Management System across civil engineering and highways projects. You will drive a zero-harm culture, shape safety strategy, and ensure compliance with legal, client, and company standards. You’ll collaborate with senior leaders and external stakeholders to improve safety performance and incident investigations. This is a opportunity to influence safety at scale, integrating policy, audits, and training to deliver measurable improvements.

Responsibilities

• Lead safety culture and plan safety stand downs
• Develop, review and own safety policies and strategy
• Manage HSEQW department resources and budgets
• Mentor and conduct PDPs for Advisors
• Approve timesheets, conduct return-to-work interviews, review site audits
• Notify HSE of incidents and report safety trends to SLT and clients
• Conduct internal audits and support external audits
• Investigate incidents and coordinate with stakeholders
• Develop and maintain Safe System of Work templates
• Attend client meetings and build relationships with HSEQW representatives
• Manage contracts for building facility services and monitor for modern slavery in supply chain
• Support resolution of Occupational Health findings and participate in social value opportunities

Key requirements

• Leadership and coaching skills with ability to challenge delivery teams and stakeholders
• Excellent communicator with network-building ability and quarterly presentations
• Proactive in driving continual HSEQW improvements
• Commitment to CPD and staying ahead of industry advancements
• High literacy in Word, Excel, and professional reporting/presentations
• Experience in safety leadership within Highways/Civil engineering
• NEBOSH Construction Certificate
• CSCS Black Card (Site Manager) or equivalent
• UK Driving Licence
