Senior Software Engineer, Git Systems

Overview

In this role you will shape the Git infrastructure that powers the world’s largest code-hosting platform. You’ll work across teams to design and operate scalable, highly available git services and contribute to the next generation of AI-driven development. You’ll mentor engineers, lead design discussions, and drive reliable deployments while collaborating with global partners. This is a hands-on, cross-functional role in a remote-first environment with a strong focus on ownership and impact.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, and ship scalable and maintainable git services within the team’s domain
• Lead technical discussions, produce design docs, and validate approaches with prototypes and stakeholder feedback
• Mentor engineers, conduct code reviews to meet quality, security, and reliability standards
• Collaborate with engineering and product to define requirements, milestones, and tradeoffs
• Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot live-site issues, and implement mitigations and postmortems
• Improve developer workflows and tooling, share learnings, and foster a collaborative, ownership-driven culture

Key requirements

• 6+ years of software engineering experience with production code in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
• or an equivalent combination of education and experience as detailed in the description
• experience delivering scalable, distributed systems and large-scale infrastructures
• ability to work in a distributed, async environment with strong written communication
• on-call incident response experience and debugging complex systems
