An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Accountant/Senior Accounts Assistant to join a small, close-knit accountancy practice. This is a varied, hands-on position suited to someone with some previous practice experience who enjoys working across different areas of accounting and being involved in the day-to-day running of a practice.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate may be involved in a wide range of duties, including:
Accounts & Year-End
Preparing annual accounts for sole traders, partnerships and limited companiesAssisting with statutory accounts preparationPreparing accounts from trial balance through to final accountsAssisting with year-end proceduresPreparing and posting year-end journalsProducing working papers and supporting schedulesAssisting with balance sheet reconciliationsReviewing and investigating discrepanciesAssisting with company accounts and general accounting queriesLiaising with the qualified accountant on more complex accounts workBookkeeping
Maintaining accurate accounting records for a portfolio of clientsProcessing purchase and sales invoicesPosting bank transactionsBank reconciliationsMaintaining ledgersProcessing expenses and paymentsProducing management information where requiredSupporting clients with bookkeeping queriesWorking with cloud accounting systems, particularly QuickBooksVAT
Preparing and submitting VAT returnsReviewing VAT records for accuracyReconciling VAT accountsAssisting clients with VAT queriesEnsuring VAT deadlines are metSupporting with VAT-related bookkeepingPayroll
Processing weekly, fortnightly or monthly payrollCalculating wages, deductions and statutory paymentsProcessing PAYE and National InsurancePreparing payroll reportsAssisting with pension submissionsDealing with payroll queriesSupporting with year-end payroll requirementsPractice & Client Support
Assisting with a varied portfolio of clientsCommunicating with clients by phone and emailResponding to day-to-day accounting queriesRequesting information and records from clientsMaintaining accurate and up-to-date client filesMeeting deadlines across multiple clientsAssisting with general administrative duties within the practiceSupporting the wider team wherever requiredBuilding strong and professional relationships with clientsGeneral Accounting Duties

The ideal candidate will have:
Previous accountancy practice experienceExperience working across a variety of accounting dutiesPractical experience with IRIS and QuickBooksGood bookkeeping and accounts preparation skillsExperience with VAT returnsSome payroll experienceStrong attention to detail and accuracyGood organisational and time-management skillsThe ability to manage multiple deadlinesGood communication and client-facing skillsA proactive and willing attitudeThe ability to work independently while also being a strong team player
