Data Protection Manager

Overview

In this role you will lead and shape data protection advisory across a large research university. You deputise for the Head of Data Protection, supervise junior staff, and embed practical governance to meet UK GDPR and related laws. You will manage DPIAs, data breach responses, and regulatory interactions with bodies like the ICO, while supporting staff and students with guidance and training. Responsibilities

• Act as a senior team member and deputise for the Head of Data Protection; manage line reports and ensure quality work
• Lead on advisory activities including DPAs, data breach management, contractual and research data protection guidance, and staff/student training
• Engage with the Information Commissioner’s Office when required; contribute to horizon-scanning and briefings to anticipate regulatory changes
• Collaborate with stakeholders across the Office of the General Counsel and wider university; represent the team in working groups
• Identify data protection issues early and escalate risk appropriately
• Support efficient team operations by fair work allocation, coverage planning, and proactive risk escalation

Key requirements

• Degree or equivalent relevant experience; significant experience in data protection advisory roles
• Strong working knowledge of UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, PECR and related legislation
• Experience drafting/reviewing/assuring DPAs and advising on complex data processing and data-sharing arrangements
• Experience producing guidance, tools and training for staff and students
• Ability to handle data protection issues independently with calm, quick reaction
• Strong relationship-building, with excellent written and oral communication and ability to present to varied audiences
• Sound judgement, analytical skills, and organisational rigour to manage competing, time-critical demands
• High level of tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality
