Role Introduction and OverviewWellington Professional Recruitment is partnering with a leading steel fabrication contractor and specialist in architectural and miscellaneous metalwork, to appoint an experienced Estimator for their growing commercial team in Dromore, Co. Down.
Established in 1993, our client has built an outstanding reputation across the UK and Ireland, delivering complex steel fabrication and metalwork packages for major tier-one contractors including Graham, Kier, Farrans, Balfour Beatty, Sisk, VINCI, Costain and Bouygues. Their projects span architectural metalwork, access structures, platforms, walkways, balconies, staircases, railings and bespoke fabrication solutions for major construction and infrastructure schemes.
As Estimator, you will take ownership of tender enquiries from initial receipt through to final submission, producing accurate, commercially sound and competitive bids for fabrication and installation packages. Working closely with design, production and contracts teams, you will play a key role in securing landmark construction projects throughout the UK and Ireland.This is an excellent opportunity for an Estimator with experience in steel fabrication, structural steelwork, architectural metalwork or a related construction sector who wants to join a stable, established business with a strong project pipeline.
Key Responsibilities as Estimator
- Review tender enquiries, drawings, specifications and schedules to determine project scope, exclusions and commercial risks.
- Carry out detailed material take-offs from architectural and structural drawings.
- Prepare accurate cost estimates for steelwork, fabrication, finishes, transport, site installation, access requirements and preliminaries.
- Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations, negotiating rates where appropriate.
- Prepare and submit professional tender documents, cost breakdowns and pricing schedules within strict deadlines.
- Identify value engineering opportunities and alternative solutions to improve commercial competitiveness.
- Liaise directly with clients and main contractors throughout the tender process.
- Attend pre-tender, mid-tender and post-tender meetings as required.
- Provide full project handover information to contracts and commercial teams following successful tenders.
- Support post-tender negotiations, variations and re-measurement activities.
- Assist in developing and improving estimating systems, benchmarks and commercial processes.
Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience as Estimator
- Minimum 3 years’ estimating experience within steel fabrication, architectural metalwork, structural steelwork or a related construction discipline.
- Proven ability to interpret architectural and structural drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
- Strong commercial awareness, numerical skills and analytical ability.
- Excellent attention to detail with a commitment to producing accurate estimates.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the confidence to engage directly with major contractors and stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple tenders simultaneously and prioritise workloads effectively.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
Desirable Criteria
- HNC, HND or Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience tendering for tier-one contractors across the UK and Ireland.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD, Tekla, SolidWorks or similar CAD/detailing software.
- Experience with estimating software, ERP systems and CRM platforms.
- Understanding of UKCA/CE marking, EN 1090 and relevant industry standards.
- Previous experience working within civils, rail, water, residential or infrastructure sectors.
