Project Engineer – Physical Architecture Lead

Overview

In this role you will lead the Physical Architecture for complex defence projects, coordinating with a multi-disciplined IPT to shape requirements, deliver robust design solutions, and oversee integration, testing and delivery. You will guide cross-functional teams across mechanical, electrical and sys‑integration disciplines to meet customer needs and quality standards. As Physical Architecture Lead, you drive design reviews and ensure compliance with Defence Standards and safety regulations. The role offers hands-on engineering leadership and the chance to influence mission-critical capabilities within a high-security, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Manage the Physical Architecture for assigned projects, ensuring alignment with technical, safety, and quality standards.
• Translate customer needs into robust engineering solutions by defining technical requirements.
• Create and maintain design documentation, drawings, specifications and test plans.
• Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure coherent design and successful integration.
• Provide technical support during build, commissioning, and in-service phases.
• Contribute to process, tool, and best-practice improvements in engineering.
• Ensure compliance with Defence Standards, quality management systems, and health and safety regulations.
• Support the Project Chief Engineer in engineering tasks and investigations.
• Assist Programme Engineering Manager and Project Chief Engineer with technical planning, progress reporting and risk management.
• Lead and participate in design reviews, verification, validation and configuration management activities.
• Liaise with project leads, suppliers and stakeholders to maintain effective technical communications.

Key requirements

• Predominantly mechanical design focus with cross‑skill coordination for physical architecture.
• Background in Automotive, Heavy Vehicle, with proven management experience.
• Experience delivering design solutions through PDR and CDR meeting customer requirements.
• Heavy Military Vehicle background with armoured plated structures.
• Degree from an accredited college or equivalent professional experience and training.
• Ability to obtain and maintain high-level security clearance.
