Band 6 Medical Engineer

Overview

In this role you will diagnose faults and perform repairs on complex medical equipment, ensuring electrical safety and clinical readiness. You will support lifecycle management and maintain records within the Equipment Management System, contributing to quality and patient safety. You’ll advise clinical staff, investigate failures, and help manage risk, while collaborating with suppliers and multi-disciplinary teams. You’ll participate in on-call support and drive service improvements, including adoption of new technologies. This is a patient-focused, safety-driven role in a large NHS trust with a commitment to inclusive, values-led culture.

Responsibilities

• Advanced fault-finding and repair of medical equipment
• Electrical safety testing and functional verification for clinical use
• Support medical device lifecycle management
• Maintain records in Equipment Management System and comply with Quality Management System
• Provide technical advice to clinical and nursing staff
• Investigate equipment failures and contribute to risk management and patient safety
• Collaborate with clinical teams, manufacturers and suppliers
• Participate in on-call and emergency support for critical devices
• Support service improvement initiatives, training, and implementation of new technologies

Key requirements

• BEng in electronics or equivalent
• Manufacturer approved technical training on a wide range of complex medical equipment
• Evidence of ongoing training and short courses
• Substantial experience in repair and maintenance of medical equipment
• Competence in electronics, mechanics, pneumatics, anaesthetics, gas, infusion therapies, computing and physiological measurement
• Experience of working in neonatal units (Maternity)
• Dexterity and hand-eye coordination
• Hold UK Driving Licence
• Willingness to participate in on-call service
• Ability to work under pressure and communicate effectively with clinical staff
• Commitment to health and safety and high standard of work
• Self-motivation and team orientation
• Ability to travel to multiple sites
