Overview

As a Senior Software Engineer II on the Wise for Banks team, you shape the technical direction of Wise’s global payment network. You’ll design scalable, reliable microservices and event-driven systems that connect banks to Wise, influencing architecture across hundreds of services. You’ll mentor engineers, raise engineering standards, and drive cross-team initiatives aligned with company goals. You’ll work closely with Product, Implementation, Solutions Engineering, and Business Development to enable international payments with speed and transparency. This role offers impact across partnerships, liquidity management, and global financial partnerships within a mission-driven fintech.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and development of scalable Java/Spring Boot services within a microservices architecture
• Model complex financial domains using domain-driven design to enable scalable solutions
• Drive event-driven architectures using Kafka (or similar) for reliable messaging and scalability
• Architect and optimise PostgreSQL databases for performance and data integrity
• Collaborate with Product, Implementation, Solutions Engineering, and Business Development on partner integrations
• Provide technical leadership and influence platform-wide engineering standards
• Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and planning to promote reliability and maintainability
• Mentor engineers and foster a culture of learning, ownership, and cross-team collaboration

Key requirements

• Extensive experience with Java and Spring Boot in production
• Strong background in designing and operating large-scale distributed systems and microservices
• Proven experience with event-driven systems using Kafka or equivalent
• Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL and relational database design for high-scale systems
• Experience applying domain-driven design to model business domains
• Track record of architecting and delivering complex, high-scale systems
