Band 5 Biomedical Scientist

Overview

In this role you join the Cellular Pathology Department to support a wide range of histology services across sites within an NHS foundation trust. You will work within a busy lab, applying histology techniques and supporting the introduction of digital pathology and new IT systems. You will be on a development path towards HCPC registration and IBMS portfolio, contributing to quality and improvement initiatives. This is a hands-on, cross-functional opportunity with rotation through the Andrology service and emphasis on learning through SOPs and best practice.

Responsibilities

• Dissection/loading, embedding and microtomy tasks
• Performing special stains and immunohistochemistry (IHC)
• Rotational work in the Andrology service
• Adhering to standard operating procedures and contributing to quality improvement
• Maintaining laboratory records and assets/ analysers, and supporting corrective/preventative actions
• Supporting with IT system upgrades and digital pathology initiatives
• Working to the laboratory quality management system
• Providing input for continuous professional development and portfolio progression

Key requirements

• BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or IBMS ratified qualification
• State registration with Health Professions Council (HCPC)
• Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)
• Experience of working in clinical laboratories and with laboratory techniques and automation

• Numeracy and ability to perform calculations
• Team player
• Good IT input and MS Office skills
• Histology techniques (dissection, embedding, microtomy)
• Special stains and immunohistochemistry (IHC)
• Laboratory automation and handling of analysers
