Genetic Counsellor

Overview

In this role you provide person-centred genetic counselling for patients with inherited cardiac conditions, focusing on cardiomyopathies. You will work within the Barts ICC team, collaborating with an MDT to deliver testing, follow-up, and risk management for patients and families. The role combines autonomous caseload management with involvement in research, education, and service development to advance cardiac genetics. You will contribute to high-quality care in a leading specialist centre, guided by the Trust’s WeCare values.

Responsibilities

• Provide genetic counselling for cardiovascular conditions, primarily inherited cardiomyopathies
• Arrange appropriate testing for patients and relatives according to national criteria
• Deliver patient- and family-centered care with documentation and follow-up
• Manage your own caseload autonomously
• Collaborate with MDTs and regional/national colleagues and contribute to service development
• Participate in research, publication, and education to advance cardiac genetics
• Support dissemination of knowledge and improve MDT understanding
• Engage in governance, documentation, and risk management as part of clinical duties

Key requirements

• MSc or STP in Genetic Counselling
• Evidence of continuing professional development
• Experience of genetic counselling clinics
• Experience of maintaining accurate and contemporaneous documentation
• Willingness to develop knowledge of cardiac genetics
• Current UK professional registration
• Experience of working with MDTs and providing patient/family centred care

• Excellent communication skills with patients, families and staff
• Exemplary organisational skills
• Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities
