Senior Civil Engineer

Overview

In this permanent role, you will lead railway structure assessments within the CAFA Structures Assessments team, contributing to design, inspection and reporting. You will mentor junior staff, liaise with clients, and ensure HSEQ compliance across projects. You’ll work across diverse asset types and support delivery to programme and budget. Responsibilities

• Prepare and check technical assessment/remits, calculations, reports and drawings per standards and client requirements
• Lead on-site inspections/examinations with technical leadership when required
• Maintain high technical standards compliant with Technical Specification and HSEQ/IMS
• Apply industry best practice and independent engineering judgement within the team
• Mentor and supervise less experienced staff in drawings, calculations, and reports
• Support staff training and development to achieve professional qualifications
• Engage with clients and third parties to maintain strong working relationships
• Ensure health, safety and environmental compliance including CDM within the Structures Assessment team
• Assist in cost estimation and delivery of commissions to programme, within budget and client requirements

Key requirements

• Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer (CEng/IEng) or working towards
• Proven railway structure inspection, assessment and design experience
• Experience with major construction materials including historical materials (cast iron, wrought iron)
• Track record in mentoring staff for professional qualifications
• Strong knowledge of health, safety, environmental and sustainability legislation
• Exposure to local and national clients (e.g., Network Rail, Local Authorities)
• Delivery of designs/assessments to Highway England/Network Rail standards
• Experience leading teams delivering contract-specific outputs to programme, budget and quality
• Proficiency with industry design/analysis software listed in description
