Principal Civil Engineer

Overview

In this role you will provide technical leadership for rail structure assessments within the CAFA team, delivering compliant designs and inspections. You will work with cross-functional colleagues across locations, contributing to safety, quality, and delivery to programme. You’ll guide junior staff, engage with clients, and ensure adherence to standards and health, safety, and environmental requirements. This is a hybrid, office-based role with opportunities to shape railway assessment practice and develop your professional credentials.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and check technical assessment remits, calculations, reports and drawings to client standards
• Lead on-site inspections and provide technical leadership during asset examinations
• Maintain high technical standards aligned with project specs and IMS/HSEQ requirements
• Apply industry best practices and engineering judgement within the team
• Mentor and supervise junior staff in drawings, calculations, and reporting
• Support training and development programs to help staff achieve professional qualifications
• Liaise with clients and third parties to maintain strong relationships
• Fulfil contractual accountabilities (e.g., CEM/CRE) and ensure safety, environmental compliance
• Contribute to cost estimation and delivery of commissions within budget and to client requirements

Key requirements

• Bachelors or Master’s degree in civil engineering or associated subject – or equivalent
• Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer (CEng/IEng) or working towards
• Extensive experience in railway structure inspection, assessment and design
• Proven ability to lead teams and deliver contract deliverables on time and to quality
• Strong knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation
• Experience with design/analysis software and railway standards
• Experience with Network Rail or similar clients
• Good client-facing and mentoring capabilities
