Overview

In this role you lead a sizeable commercial team within an established infrastructure organisation, delivering senior commercial management across a complex project portfolio. You ensure governance, procurement, and contractual compliance throughout the lifecycle, while steering value-for-money and risk management. You provide strategic commercial input on governance, business cases, and senior decisions, and develop the team towards chartership. This is a high-impact, stakeholder-facing leadership position in a regulated, capital-intensive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead commercial activity across a portfolio of complex infrastructure projects, covering pre- and post-contract stages
  • Maintain contractual compliance with robust processes, controls and escalation
  • Develop procurement and commercial strategies balancing value, risk and delivery needs
  • Manage relationships with key contractors and suppliers, incl. negotiations
  • Provide commercial input through the lifecycle: variations, claims, disputes and obligations
  • Ensure value for money across supplier and contract lifecycle
  • Oversee payment certification, cost control, forecasting, budgeting and financial governance
  • Provide cost and market data to support estimating and planning
  • Produce commercial performance reporting and senior insight on risks and opportunities
  • Lead, coach and develop a multi-level Quantity Surveying team toward chartership
  • Contribute expert commercial input into governance, business cases and strategic decisions
  • Support senior commercial leadership on dispute resolution, strategy and initiatives
  • Act as senior escalation point for commercial/contractual issues, driving corrective action

Key requirements

  • Degree or Master’s in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or related discipline
  • Significant experience in Quantity Surveying/Commercial Management within civil engineering, infrastructure or complex project environments
  • Proven experience managing a substantial commercial team of QS professionals
  • Extensive experience handling pre- and post-contract project portfolios
  • Strong contract management, procurement, supplier negotiation and risk management experience
  • Ability to assess contractual risk, supply-chain resilience and commercial exposure and advise accordingly
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills with cross-functional coordination
  • Experience budgeting, forecasting, cost control and financial governance
  • Experience dealing with claims, disputes, variations and complex contractual issues
  • Demonstrable ability to develop people and support professional progression
  • Chartered status or strong working knowledge of RICS principles and standards
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel as required
