Civil Engineer (Nuclear)

Overview

You will deliver civil engineering designs across the nuclear asset lifecycle, from feasibility to decommissioning. You join a multidisciplinary team solving complex infrastructure challenges for national-scale projects. You’ll work on sites, roads, drainage, utilities and concrete/steel structures within highly regulated environments. This role supports clean energy, national security, and long-term management of the UK’s nuclear estate, with opportunities to grow technically and professionally. You’ll collaborate with clients and partners to deliver enduring, safe, and innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

• Deliver and review civil engineering designs across the nuclear asset lifecycle (new build, operations, maintenance, life extension, decommissioning)
• Develop civil solutions for site development, roads, drainage, earthworks, utility networks and reinforced concrete/steel structures
• Conduct feasibility studies, optioneering, site assessments and concept design to inform decisions
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate civil designs with structural, mechanical, electrical and process engineering
• Prepare and review technical reports, calculations, and safety documentation
• Apply design standards, procedures and quality requirements in regulated environments
• Support project planning, design coordination and delivery to programme and budget
• Build relationships with clients, stakeholders and delivery partners across nuclear and defence sectors
• Support development of graduate and early career engineers
• Contribute to the growth and reputation of WSP’s Civil Nuclear capability

Key requirements

• Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or related discipline
• Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE) or working towards chartership
• Experience delivering civil engineering projects across the nuclear asset lifecycle (new build, operations, maintenance, life extension, decommissioning, waste management, environmental remediation)
• Understanding of UK nuclear programmes including SMRs, AMRs and related infrastructure
• Experience in design and delivery of civil solutions (site development, earthworks, drainage, highways, utilities, reinforced concrete and steel structures)
• Knowledge of design codes and standards (British Standards, Eurocodes, nuclear-specific standards)
• Experience in feasibility studies, optioneering, concept and detailed design
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and coordinate interfaces on complex projects
• Understanding of design risk management, CDM regulations and health and safety throughout the project lifecycle
• Strong technical report writing, analytical and problem-solving skills
