Consultant Psychiatrist – Cove Ward Adult Inpatients

Overview

As a Consultant Psychiatrist in a male adult inpatient unit, you will deliver proactive, recovery-focused care within a multidisciplinary team at Berrywood Hospital. You’ll assess and manage a wide range of psychiatric presentations, aiming for short acute stays and the least restrictive care. You will work in a role aligned with the NHS mission to provide high-quality services and support patient recovery. This position combines specialist clinical leadership with collaboration across teams to improve outcomes for inpatients.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement individualized, recovery-focused treatment plans for each patient
• Assess and manage a wide range of psychiatric presentations in a male inpatient ward
• Provide leadership within a multidisciplinary team and coordinate care
• Support brief, acute-phase admission management with a focus on least restrictive practices
• Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements (e.g., MHA, MCA, Section 12)
• Contribute to a fast-track, short-stay pathway and inpatient care optimization
• Collaborate with colleagues, nurses, allied health professionals, and external services to ensure high-quality care

Key requirements

• MRCPsych
• Full GMC Registration
• On Specialist Register/CCT in General Adult Psychiatry or eligible for inclusion within six months
• Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act
• In good standing with GMC regarding practice conditions

• Strong written and verbal communication
• Ability to work independently and as part of a MDT
• Ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences (including courts)
• Presenting complex information to courts and tribunals
• Experience with MHA and MCA duties
• Motivating and developing MDT members
