Data Scientist

Overview

In this role you will build and maintain data-driven forecasting for GB intraday electricity markets, delivering insights that support trading decisions. You will develop data pipelines and forecasting models, collaborating with Trading, Renewables and Flexibility teams to extend coverage across Western Europe. You’ll automate forecasting processes with checks and alerts, and leverage ML techniques to improve price forecasts. This is a tech-first, value-driven opportunity at Octopus to accelerate the Net Zero transition.

Responsibilities

• Explore data needs to trade the GB intraday power market
• Build, improve and maintain demand and renewable generation forecast models (GB, with expansion to Western Europe)
• Identify high-quality data sources for forecasts
• Develop forecasting framework and tools
• Automate forecasting processes with checks and alerting
• Leverage forecasting models to enhance price forecasts
• Collaborate with Trading, Renewables, Flexibility and other teams to share knowledge and data

Key requirements

• Proficiency in Python
• Knowledge of forecasting techniques and ability to build simple baseline models and iterate
• Ability to communicate approach, strengths and limitations
• Ability to quickly understand commercial and industry concepts
• Team player with ownership across projects and tools
• Passion for Net Zero
• Experience with Machine Learning
• Electricity industry experience in GB is useful but not required
