Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

Overview

As a backend-focused Senior Software Engineer on Navan’s AI-first team, you will help shape a next-generation expense management platform. You’ll design scalable services powering global finance workflows, from payments to accounting integrations. You’ll own features end-to-end, collaborating with product, design, and business leaders to deliver high-quality solutions. You will contribute to engineering culture by improving reliability, testing, and documentation. This role offers the chance to work on impactful fintech-scale challenges and advance AI-enabled engineering productivity.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop high-performance backend features and core services for a global customer base
• Address large-scale engineering challenges to improve reliability and performance
• Own end-to-end delivery of customer-facing features from design through deployment and support
• Collaborate with global, cross-functional teams to deliver impactful solutions
• Champion engineering best practices in code quality, scalability, monitoring, and testing
• Stay current with new technologies and industry trends to deliver elegant solutions

Key requirements

• 4–6 years of experience building and scaling complex systems (exceptionally capable candidates may have less)
• Proficiency in Java and Spring Boot with focus on JVM performance
• Experience leveraging AI models and AI-driven development
• Strong background in distributed systems, microservices, API design, and cloud platforms (AWS or similar)
• Hands-on experience building and maintaining products at scale
• Ownership mentality with post-release support through monitoring and troubleshooting
• Cross-functional collaboration skills
• Commitment to engineering best practices in testing, documentation, and code quality
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
