I’m looking for a banking and finance specialist to work as a captive lawyer for a substantial organization – good work, no marketing, flexible attitude to working practices, and a real focus on getting a transaction done in the interests of the business rather than billing or achieving targets.
It should appeal to a Managing Associate, Principal Associate or Legal Director who is technically competent but who is perhaps questioning their future in ‘Big Law’, and looking for a different environment and challenge.
You’d be moving to an innovative and fast moving environment, within which this role offers direct access to the groups key personnel, and autonomy to provide the legal advice and manage the transactions. It is hoped that in the medium term a small team can be formed, pivoted around you, specifically handling banking and finance work focused on real estate investment and financing activities.
This is a sizeable brand operating Europe wide, focusing on investment and asset management, lending and credit services. As part of their offering they provide real estate finance – originating, underwriting, and servicing specialist real estate loans to a broad client base which includes well known developers undertaking large-scale complex projects. Individual finance arrangements can vary from £10million to over £200million.
The business as a whole is in growth mode, and within that they’re investing in their legal capabilities for various specialist areas including banking and finance, real estate, and insolvency.
As the main lawyer in banking and finance you can be based in Leeds or Manchester, with flexible hybrid working and occasional travel to London in the interest of maintaining strong working relationships. Stakeholder management is an important element of the role.
You’ll likely have 6yrsPQE or upwards, as this is a technical role which is stand alone, so you need to feel excited to have that level of responsibility, rather than daunted about technical limitations. You’ll be expected to negotiate and draft finance documentation, manage transactions from instruction to completion, and balance legal and regulatory and commercial considerations.
Experience of corporate lending, real estate finance, bridging finance, private credit, or alternative lending markets is all relevant. But it is definitely a role for a banking and finance background more so than a real estate background – there are seperate property law specialists within the brand, whereas this is a defined role with a different technical focus.
