We are currently recruiting for an experienced Environmental Protection Officer to join an Essex-based Council on an initial 6-month contract.
The role will focus primarily on noise nuisance, commercial noise complaints and waste accumulation, dealing with a varied caseload of environmental protection matters and taking appropriate action to resolve complaints and address statutory nuisance.
The Role
The successful Environmental Protection Officer will manage a caseload of reactive environmental protection work, with a particular emphasis on noise complaints arising from commercial premises, residential noise nuisance and issues relating to waste accumulation.
You will be responsible for investigating complaints, carrying out site visits and gathering evidence before determining the appropriate course of action, including enforcement where necessary.
Key Responsibilities
Investigate noise nuisance complaints from both residential and commercial properties.
Deal with complaints relating to commercial noise, including noise from businesses, premises, plant, equipment and activities.
Investigate waste accumulation and associated environmental protection issues.
Undertake site visits, inspections and investigations to assess complaints and gather evidence.
Assess potential statutory nuisance and determine appropriate action.
Use relevant monitoring and investigative techniques, including noise monitoring where required.
Liaise with residents, businesses, complainants, landowners and other stakeholders.
Provide advice and guidance to businesses and residents on environmental protection requirements.
Prepare detailed investigation notes, reports and case documentation.
Serve statutory notices and undertake enforcement action where appropriate.
Manage a caseload effectively and ensure investigations are progressed within appropriate timescales.
Work closely with other Council teams and external agencies where necessary.
About You
We are looking for an experienced Environmental Protection Officer with strong practical experience in environmental nuisance investigations.
Ideally, you will have:
Previous Local Authority Environmental Protection experience.
Strong experience dealing with noise nuisance investigations.
Experience investigating commercial noise complaints.
Knowledge and practical experience of statutory nuisance legislation and enforcement.
Experience dealing with waste accumulation and associated environmental issues.
Strong investigative, evidence-gathering and report-writing skills.
The ability to deal confidently with members of the public, businesses and other stakeholders.
Experience of taking appropriate enforcement action where voluntary resolution is not possible.
The ability to manage a varied caseload independently and work effectively to deadlines.
