Specialist Biomedical Scientist Haematology

Overview

In this role you will support Haematology and Blood Transfusion services across two hospital sites, contributing to quality management and service improvement. You will work within a 24/7 roster, develop staff, engage in audits and CPD, and help maintain accreditation standards. Responsibilities

• Assist Section Leads with Quality Management System (QMS) activities in the Designated Section
• Support staff training and supervision within the Designated Section
• Maintain stock levels and record reagent lot numbers for audit purposes
• Monitor IQC and EQA performance and investigate issues with the Section Lead BMS
• Attend and contribute to laboratory meetings; present quality updates when required
• Draft and maintain SOPs and related documentation to support ISO15189 accreditation
• Maintain equipment and liaise with service engineers as needed
• Lead verification and documentation for new techniques to ensure ISO15189 compliance
• Liaise with company representatives under direction of Section Lead BMS
• Handle telephone inquiries and provide results or advice as appropriate
• Review analyser results and authorize or escalate as needed
• Assist with sample referrals and data entry into the laboratory IT system
• Perform routine Haematology and Blood Transfusion investigations; operate across all sections as required
• Conduct microscopic examination of stained blood films and report findings
• Participate in 24-7 shift rota with ability to work independently and respond to incidents
• Supervise training and monitor performance of BMS/MLA staff
• Attend NEQAS meetings; training on new equipment as required
• Contribute to departmental policy, planning and annual reviews
• Maintain professional standards and compliance with Trust policies

Key requirements

• HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist
• IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology with Hospital Transfusion Practice
• Experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusion tests within an NHS laboratory
• Willingness to participate in shift work across two hospital sites
• Ability to work unsupervised and handle Health and Safety responsibilities
• Post-registration experience in routine Haematology/Blood Transfusion analyses
• Good communication and organizational skills
