Data Science Manager

Overview

In this role you lead multiple sport-specific modelling teams within a fast-growing sports analytics business. You’ll partner with the Head of Data Science to scale capabilities, maintain technical quality, and shape department strategy. You drive cross-team delivery, mentor Lead Data Scientists, and ensure cohesive, high-performance operations. This is a hands-on leadership role that connects modelling excellence with practical forecasting impact in a sports betting context.

Responsibilities

• Resource planning for Data Scientists to optimize project objectives
• Coach and develop Data Science Leads across teams
• Assist Leads with planning, prioritisation, and delivery of forecasting models
• Set and uphold technical standards, code practices, and documentation
• Identify and address capacity, capability, or performance risks
• Collaborate with Delivery and Engineering to maintain efficient operations
• Shape department-wide strategy, tooling, and hiring plans
• Foster cross-team learning, innovation, and best practices
• Escalation point for technical or resourcing issues across teams
• Represent the Data Science function in cross-departmental forums
• Maintain a collaborative, high-performance culture within modelling

Key requirements

• Proven success in managing Data Science Leads and growing teams
• Ability to align delivery across multiple projects and domains
• Strong model development and deployment background with coaching capability
• Advanced programming experience (R/Python/C#/Java)
• Excellent communication and leadership across technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Experience in hiring, performance management, and team development
• Cross-functional planning, prioritisation, and capacity management
• Champions collaboration, experimentation, and delivery
• Domain expertise in sports modelling or betting products
• 2+ years managing teams and delivering across multiple modelling projects
