Mechanical Engineer

Overview

In this role you will maintain optimal building environmental conditions by managing M&E systems and the Building Management System (BMS). You will perform planned and reactive maintenance, diagnose faults, and supervise subcontractors to BGIS standards. The role focuses on reliable operation of HVAC, pumps, and electrical systems, with strong safety and record-keeping responsibilities. You will collaborate with teams and client representatives to drive continuous improvements and efficient facilities operation. This is a hands-on, problem-solving position at a central London site with a clear impact on service quality and sustainability.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and manage the BMS to maintain internal conditions
• Lead investigations into environmental conditions, system failures, and faults
• Carry out PPM and reactive maintenance on M&E plant and equipment
• Diagnose and resolve issues with air conditioning, UPS, generators, and LV systems
• Ensure compliance with health and safety procedures, including permits to work
• Maintain accurate records in the maintenance system (e.g., Maximo) and complete required documentation
• Supervise subcontractors and ensure work meets BGIS standards
• Keep plant rooms secure, clean, and well-organized
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and proactively identify areas for enhancement

Key requirements

• NVQ Level 2/3 Plumbing, Mechanical Engineering, Building Services or equivalent trade qualification
• Formal training in mechanical systems (City & Guilds or NVQ equivalent), ideally HVAC or plumbing
• Strong understanding of heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems and controls
• Experience in maintaining and repairing pumps, valves, pipework, and plumbing components
• Ability to diagnose and resolve faults in mechanical plant including chillers, boilers, AHUs
• Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS)
• Good knowledge of health and safety practices including permits to work and risk assessments
• Excellent communication skills and basic IT proficiency for maintenance records
