VANRATH is currently recruiting for a Discrimination Advice Officer to join a highly respected public sector organisation based in Belfast.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced advisory professional with a background in legal, industrial relations, equal opportunities or social rights to join a specialist team providing information and guidance to individuals who believe they may have experienced discrimination.

You will be joining a respected public sector organisation responsible for promoting and supporting equality and good relations across Northern Ireland.

As part of the Discrimination Advice team, you will provide information and guidance to potential claimants and enquirers who believe they may have been discriminated against under Northern Ireland’s anti-discrimination legislation.

The role may also involve providing advice to individuals seeking guidance in relation to potential complaints under Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 or Article 2 of the Windsor Framework.

About you

The successful candidate will have either:

  • Relevant formal qualifications equivalent to the required standard; or
  • Three years’ employment experience in an advisory capacity in a related area such as legal work, industrial relations, equal opportunities or social rights.

You will also have a minimum of one year’s post-education experience in a related area, including at least six months in an advisory capacity.

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience working in an advisory capacity
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Good written communication skills
  • The ability to accurately record information
  • The ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • An understanding of equality-related issues and/or relevant advisory environments

What you’ll do

  • Deal with enquiries and correspondence from individuals, primarily by telephone and email, with face-to-face interviews where required
  • Take preliminary information from enquirers and accurately record details of requests and complaints
  • Provide appropriate information and guidance in response to enquiries
  • Ensure information is provided and recorded in accordance with data protection responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate database and file records for all enquiries
  • Process applications for assistance and refer these to the relevant Casework team in line with procedures
  • Make reasonable adjustments to service provision to meet the specific needs of individuals with disabilities and those for whom English is not their first language
  • Maintain appropriate knowledge and understanding of equality legislation and case law
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade.
