Overview

As a Life Medical Underwriter, you evaluate medical and financial risk to inform underwriting decisions across Life Insurance, Critical Illness Cover, and Income Protection. Responsibilities

  • Assess life and disability risk by reviewing applications and determining appropriate underwriting terms within your autonomy level
  • Make underwriting decisions across Life, Critical Illness and Income Protection balancing risk, outcomes, and commercial needs
  • Lead or participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance underwriting quality, systems, efficiency, and viability
  • Request additional medical or financial information when appropriate, ensuring proportionate impact on the customer journey
  • Identify potential complaints, escalate and address promptly with root-cause analysis for continuous improvement and regulatory compliance
  • Maintain accurate underwriting records to support reporting and decision-making
  • Stay up-to-date with legislative and regulatory requirements ensuring compliant underwriting decisions
  • Communicate professionally with internal stakeholders, customers, and third parties using multiple channels
  • Ensure underwriting activity aligns with service levels and delivery standards during the sales process

Key requirements

  • Proven experience underwriting UK protection products
  • UK medical underwriting experience (essential)
  • Strong understanding of mortality and morbidity risk factors, including financial underwriting
  • Extensive knowledge of Life, Critical Illness, and Income Protection products
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of relevant UK legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Experience contributing to or leading underwriting improvement initiatives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborative and customer-focused mindset
  • Ability to balance risk with customer outcomes and commercial considerations
