Principal Mechanical Engineer

Overview

In this role you lead ultra-high-precision mechanical design efforts from concept to production, shaping product direction and technical standards. You mentor engineers and guide cross-functional teams to solve complex problems and deliver on time and within cost targets. You will influence how new technologies are brought to market and work on demanding nanometre-level applications. Responsibilities

• Lead the development of robust concept and detailed design solutions
• Investigate, analyse, and resolve complex mechanical design issues
• Lead and participate in design reviews
• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to engineers and contractors
• Deliver projects to agreed schedule and cost targets
• Ensure designs meet regulatory and compliance requirements

Key requirements

• Proven ability to lead cross-functional, matrix-based teams and mentor staff
• Experience leading small teams (3–5 engineers) delivering opto-electro-mechanical solutions on time and budget
• Strong analytical and practical problem-solving skills with attention to detail
• Ability to rapidly conceive, visualise, and engineer complex mechanical systems
• Understanding of systems engineering principles, including drives and control systems
• Know when to involve external specialists or alternative approaches
• Strong verbal and written communication with customers and internal stakeholders
• Proficient in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) including stiffness and vibration analysis
