About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Transport Planner to join our growing transport planning team in Manchester.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone at the early stage of their transport planning career to gain experience across a wide range of projects, working alongside experienced transport planners, engineers, developers and other built-environment professionals.
You will support the delivery of transport planning projects from initial assessment through to submission and implementation, developing your technical, analytical and client-facing skills along the way.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation of transport assessments, transport statements and travel plans.
- Support transport planning studies for residential, commercial, retail, education and mixed-use developments.
- Undertake traffic generation and distribution assessments.
- Assist with junction capacity and network analysis.
- Analyse traffic, transport and travel data and present findings clearly.
- Support parking assessments and accessibility assessments.
- Assist with the preparation of technical reports, drawings, plans and supporting documentation.
- Undertake research into local transport networks, policies and development proposals.
- Liaise with clients, local authorities, highways officers and other project stakeholders under appropriate supervision.
- Attend project meetings and contribute to discussions with colleagues and clients.
- Support the preparation of planning applications and responses to highways and transport-related queries.
- Keep up to date with relevant transport planning guidance, standards and local policies.
- Contribute to the successful delivery of projects within agreed timescales and budgets.
About You
We are looking for someone who is keen to develop a career in transport planning and has a genuine interest in how people and goods move around our towns and cities.
You will ideally have:
- A degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Some relevant experience in transport planning, highways, traffic engineering or a related field, although recent graduates will be considered.
- An understanding of UK transport planning principles and the development planning process.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Good attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Competence with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- A willingness to learn new software, techniques and methodologies.
Desirable Experience
Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
- Junction capacity modelling, including Junctions 10 or similar software.
- TRICS trip generation analysis.
- GIS and mapping software.
- Traffic surveys and transport data analysis.
- AutoCAD or other technical drawing packages.
- Local authority highways or development management processes.
- Preparation of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements or Travel Plans.
- Knowledge of relevant DfT guidance and UK transport planning standards.
