Senior Staff Software Engineer – Risk Assessment Platform, Servicing

Overview

As a Senior Staff Engineer in the Risk Assessment Platform squad, you will own core components and long-term technical strategy to enable fast, safe risk assessments for Wise product teams and compliant controls for Financial Crime teams. You will work on high-throughput, data-centric systems, shaping end-to-end risk workflows and data integrity solutions. This role offers broad influence across teams, a focus on scalable architecture, and meaningful impact on Wise’s mission to move money safely and efficiently. You will lead with technical vision and mentor others to raise our engineering standards.

Responsibilities

• Own fundamental components, libraries and core infrastructure within the Risk Assessment Platform
• Define and drive long-term technical strategy for your domain
• Spearhead data integrity initiatives addressing data lineage, completeness and validity
• Design technical contracts between Product and Financial Crime teams
• Build robust, scalable end-to-end risk assessment workflows
• Drive system optimization to improve speed, latency, and cost metrics
• Collaborate across diverse teams and mentor others
• Translate complex concepts for broad stakeholder alignment

Key requirements

• Java backend expertise in production-proven microservice architectures
• Strong understanding of synchronous and asynchronous communication protocols
• Experience owning and designing fundamental components and shared libraries
• Technical leadership and ability to map out a clear strategy for ownership area
• Excellent communication and cross-team collaboration skills
• Nice to have: data streaming/processing frameworks experience
• Nice to have: fintech, regtech, or high-throughput financial systems background
