Senior or Principal Building Structures Engineer – York

Overview

In this role you will lead structural design delivery for infrastructure and Ministry of Justice projects, including prisons and secure facilities. You will guide technical outputs, manage multi-scheme performance, and mentor junior staff, partnering with architects and services engineers. The position offers leadership across projects, with a focus on robust Eurocode-compliant solutions and risk-aware delivery. Responsibilities

• Lead production of structural designs, calculations, drawings and technical documentation.
• Develop robust, code-compliant solutions aligned with Eurocodes, Building Regulations and client requirements.
• Review and check deliverables for technical quality.
• Lead and support engineers and technicians across single and multidisciplinary projects.
• Manage design quality and programme performance across multiple schemes.
• Develop solutions for new-build, refurbishment, alteration and strengthening projects.
• Coordinate with architects, MEP engineers, contractors and other disciplines.
• Undertake site surveys, inspections and technical assessments.
• Liaise with clients, suppliers and stakeholders.
• Manage design risks and ensure CDM compliance.
• Contribute to bids, proposals and work-winning activities.
• At Principal level, manage budgets, resources and commercial performance.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers; undertake people-management where required.

Key requirements

• A degree or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Extensive building-structures design experience.
• Strong knowledge of steel, concrete, masonry and timber structures.
• Detailed knowledge of Structural Eurocodes, Building Regulations and design governance.
• Experience leading engineers and technicians.
• Ability to produce, check and approve robust engineering deliverables.
• Experience managing quality and programme performance across multiple projects.
• Familiarity with Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Tedds and 3D design software.
• Strong client and stakeholder-management skills.
• Incorporated or Chartered status with a professional institution.
• Chartered status and demonstrated technical leadership for Principal level.
