Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Cardiff

Overview

In this role, you lead technically complex geotechnical projects and shape ground models for major infrastructure. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality designs, manage resources and client relations, and mentor junior engineers. The position emphasizes innovation, sustainability, and data-driven delivery through 3D ground models. You’ll contribute to bids, grow the geotechnical business, and help shape a positive team culture within a global engineering firm.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of complex geotechnical and geological projects with focus on quality, schedule, and commercial performance
• Develop and review ground models, geotechnical interpretation, and design parameters for infrastructure schemes
• Perform and verify geotechnical analyses and designs for slopes, retaining structures, foundations, earthworks, and geohazards
• Manage projects and multidisciplinary work packages including resource planning, financial performance, and client satisfaction
• Serve as a primary client contact, building trusted relationships and pursuing repeat/new business
• Design, procure, and manage ground investigations; oversee site activities and provide technical leadership
• Mentor and guide junior engineers and engineering geologists to develop talent
• Contribute to bids, tenders, and business development activities for geotechnical growth
• Champion innovation, sustainability, and digital delivery practices (e.g., 3D ground models, data-driven solutions)

Key requirements

• Strong technical understanding of geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, ground risk management and site investigation
• Proven experience delivering geotechnical assessments, designs and project management in consultancy, contractor, or client environments
• Solid knowledge of soil/rock mechanics, geotechnical analysis, and industry design standards
• Experience leading project tasks and coordinating multidisciplinary teams
• Excellent verbal and written communication for high-quality reports and design deliverables
• Experience planning and supervising ground investigations, managing contractors, and interpreting complex ground conditions
• Strong client-facing skills; ability to manage stakeholder expectations and support business development
• Proactive, collaborative approach and commitment to developing junior team members
• Chartered status or progress towards chartership in near term
