Backend Software Engineer

Overview

In this role you will drive automation and centralisation across partner pricing and billing. You will build reconciliation systems to ensure pricing and billing accuracy and design automated controls supporting compliance and financial integrity. You will deliver secure, long-term solutions for partner requirements and contribute to architecture, code quality, and observability. You work with event-driven tech and AI tooling to enhance delivery and system resilience. This is a hands-on, impact-driven engineering position within Wise’s mission to move money efficiently for everyone, everywhere.

Responsibilities

• Drive automation and centralisation across partner pricing and billing systems
• Build and extend reconciliation systems for pricing and billing accuracy
• Design and implement automated controls around pricing and billing for compliance and integrity
• Deliver secure solutions with a long-term architectural perspective
• Design and build end-to-end features across pricing and billing services
• Contribute to architectural decisions and code reviews to improve quality, reliability, and observability
• Improve resilience and scalability of systems supporting external partners and financial operations
• Work with event-driven architectures (Kafka) alongside MongoDB and MariaDB to build auditable, extensible systems
• Use AI tooling in the development lifecycle to support delivery and code quality

Key requirements

• Strong software engineering fundamentals
• Experience with Java or a similar OO language
• Ability to design long-term scalable systems
• Accountability for availability, reliability, and security
• Good judgement balancing speed, scalability, and risk
• Ability to address technical debt pragmatically
• Commitment to engineering best practices across observability, security, testing, and responsible data usage
• Ownership of technical deliverables from design through production
• Ability to justify business and partner value of what is built

• Experience with onboarding or mentoring engineers and cross-functional collaboration
