At North West Ambulance Service, our purpose is to help people when they need us most by delivering the right care, at the right time, in the right place, every time. We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Improvement Support Officer to help deliver this vision.

This role will provide coordinated operational support to the Trust’s improvement strategy and priorities, helping to plan, deliver and evaluate improvement programmes, events and initiatives across the North West.

Main duties of the job

Working closely with Improvement Managers, Improvement Advisors and service teams, you will act as a key coordination point for improvement activity. You will support stakeholder engagement, coaching and teaching; maintain programme documentation, actions, risks and progress updates; and turn improvement information into clear reports, briefings and communications for a range of audiences and media platforms.

Working for our organisation

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport.

Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

About you

We are looking for someone who is organised, adaptable and proactive, with excellent communication skills and the confidence to build positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. You will be comfortable balancing competing priorities, presenting information clearly and creatively, and working as part of a supportive team to make a positive contribution to improvement across the Trust.

Regular travel across North West locations will be required.

The interview date will be confirmed and is expected to take place Tue 20th October 2026.

Person specification

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor information clearly and professionally for staff at all levels and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to multitask, switch between activities and manage competing priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to support the organisation and facilitation of meetings, workshops, learning events and collaborative improvement activities with a wide range of attendees.
  • Ability to handle, prioritise or signpost a range of enquiries promptly, professionally and with sensitivity.
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams, with the ability to produce high-quality reports, presentations and communications
  • Ability to collect, analyse and present information from a range of sources in a clear and meaningful format.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and networks with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrates initiative and able to work independently whilst contributing effectively as part of a wider team.
  • Attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate records and produce high-quality documentation.
  • Ability to support change and improvement activities through a structured and organised approach.
  • Ability to support, coach and teach colleagues in improvement approaches, with a willingness to learn the Trust’s building capability offers, tools and techniques.

Qualification and Knowledge

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience in a relevant area
  • Evidence of continuing personal and professional development.
  • Knowledge of improvement, service improvement or project management principles and methodologies.
  • Willingness to develop knowledge of the Trust’s building capability offers, improvement tools and techniques, and apply these when supporting teams and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of data collection, measurement and reporting techniques.
  • Understanding of the NHS, its values and the challenges facing healthcare services.
  • Knowledge of governance, audit or assurance processes relevant to improvement work.
  • Training or introductory qualification in improvement or related methodology or equivalent training.

Experience

  • Experience of providing project, programme or administrative support within a complex organisation.
  • Experience of supporting the organisation and facilitation of meetings, workshops, events or learning activities involving multiple stakeholders from different backgrounds or organisations.
  • Experience of collecting, analysing and presenting data to support decision-making and improvement activities.
  • Experience of producing reports, presentations, briefing papers or communication materials for different audiences
  • Experience of working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders to achieve shared objectives
  • Experience of maintaining records, action logs, workplans or project documentation
  • Experience of supporting quality improvement, service improvement, transformation or project change initiatives.
  • Experience of working within the NHS or public sector environment.

  • Flexibility to regularly travel and work across multiple locations as required in the North West.
