Senior / Principal Power Systems Engineer

Overview

In this role you will develop and deliver grid connection services for renewable energy projects, primarily across the UK and Ireland. You will work within AECOM’s Energy team to perform power system studies, grid code compliance analyses, and due diligence to support project delivery from siting to commissioning. You’ll engage with clients and OEMs, contribute to budgets and schedules, and help shape technical outcomes for utility-scale developments. Responsibilities

• Support electrical design through power system studies
• Conduct detailed power system/grid code compliance studies using PSCAD, PowerFactory, and PSS/E
• Participate in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables
• Perform grid connection due diligence including grid prospecting, optioneering, risk assessment and capacity/constraints assessment
• Apply expertise across the PS&E package stages
• Develop construction cost estimates and technical effort estimates
• Perform or support quality control reviews of design calculations or drawings
• Prepare technical specification sections
• Provide input to engineering budget and scheduling
• Liaise with OEMs and clients to drive technical outcomes
• Support bids and proposals

Key requirements

• Proven experience in Engineering Design Consultancy or OEM/Utility Network Planning
• Understanding of transmission and distribution planning for regulated and industrial networks
• Strong knowledge of UK Grid Code, G99, G5/5, P28; Ireland Grid Code knowledge beneficial
• Proficient in PSCAD, PowerFactory and Python scripting
• Desirable experience with PSSE and ETAP
• Understanding of control and protection principles for HV substations, transmission lines, generators, transformers, reactive equipment
• Basic understanding of power electronics and control systems for renewables
