About the company
We are working with a defence technology company building software for defence and national-security customers in the UK and internationally.
The team develops software that operates in demanding, real-world environments where reliability, security, and data sovereignty are critical. Their platform helps defence users make sense of data from multiple sources while running entirely on customer-controlled infrastructure.
The engineering team is small and senior, with a strong culture of technical ownership. Engineers work across the system, engage directly with customers, and see their software deployed in operational environments.
The role
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the core engineering team.
This is a hands‑on engineering role with significant ownership. You will design, build, and ship production systems, work across different parts of the technical stack, and support deployments and trials alongside customers and partners.
The company’s primary engineering language is Rust, but prior Rust experience is not essential. Strong engineers coming from C, C++, or another systems programming background are encouraged to apply.
You will also spend time in customer environments, often working through unfamiliar technical constraints and helping ensure systems operate reliably outside a conventional software development environment.
What you will work on
- Design and build production software in Rust.
- Develop systems that process and integrate data from multiple sources.
- Work on software deployed onto customer-controlled infrastructure.
- Reason about system-level reliability, security, and correctness.
- Support customer deployments, integrations, and operational trials.
- Diagnose problems in unfamiliar environments and take ownership through resolution.
- Contribute to architectural and engineering decisions as the platform develops.
- Work directly with customers, partners, and senior engineers across the company.
- Help shape engineering practices and culture as the team grows.
What we are looking for
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- A strong track record of shipping and owning production software.
- Significant experience with a systems language such as Rust, C, or C++.
- Strong working proficiency with Linux.
- Ability to operate independently in unfamiliar technical environments.
- A rigorous approach to software correctness, reliability, and security.
- Strong technical judgement, including when working under operational constraints.
- Comfort taking ownership beyond a narrowly defined component or codebase.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Willingness to travel to customer and partner sites when required.
Particularly relevant experience
You do not need to meet all of the following, but they would be valuable:
- Professional experience with Rust.
- Contributions to, or meaningful involvement with, open-source software.
- Experience in defence, national security, aerospace, or another mission‑critical technical environment.
- Previous forward‑deployed, field engineering, or customer‑facing engineering experience.
- Experience deploying software into constrained, offline, on‑premise, or security‑sensitive environments.
- Experience building distributed systems, infrastructure, networking, or systems‑level software.
How the team works
Engineers are expected to understand the broader system. Reliability and software quality are shared responsibilities across the team.
The company operates a hybrid/remote model and is open to candidates based in the UK or EU. The team meets regularly in person, and engineers travel to customer sites when deployments or trials require it.
You will work directly with experienced engineers and customers, have substantial autonomy over your work, and help shape both the product and the engineering organisation as the company grows.
