About The Role
The Automation Engineer at Amazon TA plays a vital role within our Operations team, ensuring that our automated systems operate at peak performance to meet our high standards of efficiency and reliability. This position requires frequent travel between regional sites within London, approximately 50% of the weekly time, to support, troubleshoot, and enhance automation systems across multiple locations. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of Amazon’s emerging technologies, working on complex productivity challenges by exploring data from control systems, sensors, and other equipment. Your expertise will help maximize equipment availability, reduce downtime, and improve overall operational efficiency, directly contributing to our goal of delivering customer orders on time.
Qualifications
- The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background with relevant experience in automation and engineering. Basic qualifications include experience with PLC-controlled automation and issue diagnosis in continuous process or production environments. An engineering degree such as a UK Higher National Diploma (HND), Higher National Certificate (HNC), BTEC National Diploma or Certificate (OND/D), NVQ III/IV/V in Engineering Manufacture, or equivalent is required. Additionally, candidates should have experience supporting various conveyors and sortation systems, and fluency in English is essential.
- Preferred qualifications include familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Office, project management platforms, EPLAN, Ladder Logic, and structured programming for PLCs from Siemens, Allen‑Bradley, or Codesys. Experience with SCADA systems like Ignition, Human Machine Interface (HMI), EthernetIP, Profinet, Profibus, AS‑i networks, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), safety gateways, and input/output devices will be advantageous. Certifications such as IEng, CEng, or relevant apprenticeships with subsequent qualifications are also valued.
Responsibilities
- As an Automation Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairing critical automated systems such as conveyors, sortation systems, and other material handling equipment. You will work closely with the EU Controls network to oversee key metrics, interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, and develop strategies for system improvements conforming to IEC 61131‑3 standards. Providing data visualizations and troubleshooting insights to internal stakeholders is essential to facilitate informed decision‑making.
- You will own or actively participate in continuous improvement projects, collaborating across departments to ensure systems are well‑documented and backup libraries are maintained. Installing and commissioning new equipment, supporting other sites within the EU Controls network, and supporting global colleagues in deploying new automation solutions are also key aspects of your role. Additionally, you will share your technical expertise with colleagues, providing training and guidance to ensure effective preventative maintenance and troubleshooting practices.
