Senior Network Engineer

Summary
We are seeking a Senior Network Engineer to support the transition, implementation and future operation of enterprise network services, ensuring that network infrastructure is secure, resilient, well documented and capable of supporting business-critical operations.
Although the long-term approach is to provide stable, ongoing network services and support transformation projects, the immediate focus of the role will be on service transition and project implementation activities, including technical delivery, operational readiness, network documentation, change support and handover into BAU service operations.
The successful candidate will provide strong technical expertise across LAN, WAN, data centre, wireless, mobile and security technologies, working closely with customer stakeholders, internal engineering teams, service management functions, third-party suppliers and project teams to deliver reliable technical solutions for both transition activities and ongoing transformation initiatives.
The position requires a proactive engineer with excellent troubleshooting skills, strong ownership of technical deliverables and the ability to operate effectively in complex, multi-site and mission-critical environments during transition, transformation and steady-state service phases.
Key Responsibilities
- Service transition and implementation: Support incoming service transition and project implementation activities, including technical delivery, operational readiness, testing, documentation and handover into BAU operations.
- Network operations and support: Support stable ongoing network services by managing network-related incidents, service requests and escalations in line with agreed service levels.
- Transformation projects: Contribute to network transformation initiatives by providing technical input, implementation support, migration assistance and specialist engineering expertise.
- Technical implementation: Install, configure, commission and support network infrastructure platforms including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers and associated connectivity services.
- Network design and engineering: Provide input into network design, technical options, equipment recommendations and deployment approaches for enterprise and customer engineering projects.
- Monitoring and network health: Monitor network performance and availability using management tools, perform regular health checks, identify risks or degradation and support corrective actions.
- Routing, switching and secure connectivity: Administer and troubleshoot network protocols and technologies including MPLS, BGP, OSPF, IPsec, VLANs, spanning tree, QoS, remote access and secure routing solutions.
- Change management: Support network change planning, implementation, communications and procedural compliance within the agreed change control framework.
- Documentation and knowledge transfer: Create and maintain accurate, clear and comprehensive network documentation, operational procedures and knowledge articles to support transition, transformation and BAU operations.
- Security, resilience and performance: Support network availability, performance, scalability and security through traffic management, WAN optimisation, caching, firewalling, encryption and quality-of-service techniques.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience
- Extensive experience designing, installing, commissioning and supporting complex multi-site LAN and WAN networks, predominantly using Cisco technologies.
- Strong knowledge of routing and switching, IP addressing and dynamic routing protocols including BGP and OSPF.
- Hands-on experience with MPLS, IPsec, QoS, VPN and firewall technologies.
- Strong network troubleshooting and problem-solving skills within enterprise, data centre or customer-facing environments.
- Experience with Cisco routers, switches and Nexus platforms.
- Experience supporting network security technologies, including firewalls, access control and encryption.
- Experience using network monitoring and diagnostic tools such as SolarWinds, NetFlow or packet analysers.
- Ability to produce and maintain network documentation, diagrams and technical procedures.
- Experience working with incident, service request and change management processes.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- CCNP Enterprise or equivalent certification.
- Experience with F5 load balancers.
- Experience with Juniper or other firewall technologies.
- Experience with DHCP, DNS, RADIUS/TACACS+ and related network services.
- Experience in transport, public sector, regulated or mission-critical environments.
