Job Purpose
The Development team at Gresham is responsible for identifying, building and maintaining innovative technologies that solve our customers’ Control, Connect, Data and EDM problems. As a Lead Software Engineer in our Control team, you are one of the team’s technical leaders, helping to set technical direction, shape the design of our platform and raise the engineering bar, working closely with Product, Architecture and key stakeholders while maintaining a strong customer focus.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role with no line management responsibilities. You’ll spend most of your time designing and building software — primarily backend services in Kotlin and Spring Boot alongside our established Java codebase, with some contribution across the stack to our React and TypeScript front end.
You’ll also play a leading role in evolving our cloud-native, multi-tenant platform (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, PostgreSQL), helping modernise our systems and engineering practices along the way. And you’ll help shape both how we build AI-powered features into our products, and how we use AI tools to change the way we engineer software.
Job Responsibilities
- Set technical direction and drive system design decisions across the Control platform
- Design and build backend services in Kotlin/Spring Boot, and contribute to our React/TypeScript front end
- Take AI-powered product features from experimentation to secure, production-ready reality
- Champion the adoption of AI tools across the team’s engineering workflow
- Own the performance, scalability, security and reliability of our AWS/Kubernetes platform
- Set the standard on code quality, automated testing, CI/CD and observability
- Embed secure coding and privacy-by-design practices into everyday engineering
- Mentor and coach engineers through pairing, reviews and knowledge sharing
- Break down complex problems, spotting technical risks and dependencies early
- Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis on complex, production-critical issues
- Triage customer-reported issues with our Support team, driving them to resolution
- Collaborate with other tech leads and architects to align on shared standards
- Be the domain expert others turn to, shaping the platform’s technical direction
Job Requirements
- Senior or Lead-level engineer with real technical leadership experience under your belt
- Strong backend engineering in Kotlin and Java with Spring Boot — Kotlin is our language of choice for new work
- Solid React and TypeScript experience; full stack capability is a big plus
- Hands-on running cloud-native apps in production with Docker, Kubernetes and AWS
- Strong PostgreSQL skills — data modelling, query optimisation, schema migrations
- Sharp on modern engineering practice: testing, CI/CD, code review, observability, secure coding
- AI-literate day to day, with genuine interest in building features on LLMs (prompt design, RAG, agents)
- Well versed in Agile and Lean, comfortable leading delivery end to end
- Strong grip on domain and business context, owning critical parts of the platform
- Bonus points for financial services or fintech experience — reconciliation, payments, data integrity
