Purpose of the Role
An outstanding opportunity has arisen for a strategic Head of Software Development to join
the largest online kitchen retailer in the UK. Reporting directly to the Sales and Marketing Director, this vital senior role offers the platform to shape the company’s engineering future by leading, mentoring, and developing an existing team of software engineers. As a key driver of expansion, you
will play a hands-on role in building the department through recruiting and onboarding new
developers to support ongoing commercial success.
Key responsibilities
- Resource & Project Management: Align engineering effort with product timelines and deliver complex software projects on schedule.
- Performance Management: Conduct regular performance reviews and foster a high-performance culture across the development team.
- Talent Development: Support individual engineers through tailored professional development plans, mentorship, and structured skill acquisition.
- Executive Communication: Deliver clear updates on project progress, mitigation strategies for technical risks, and critical dependencies directly to company directors.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional internal teams to evaluate, prioritise, and road-map new software fixes and features.
- Engineering Excellence: Uphold strict software development standards and implement robust tracking workflows using agile tools like Jira and Trello.
- Cybersecurity Assurance: Embed essential security protocols into the developmentlifecycle, ensuring the team consistently adheres to modern cybersecurity best practices.
Skills & Expertise
- Leadership & Team Building: Proven track record of successfully leading, scaling, and structuring high-performing software engineering teams.
- Technical & Strategic Balance: Ability to merge high-level strategic vision with hands-on technical guidance, combining strong organisational skills with a passion for solving complex problems.
- Modern Stack Experience: Practical familiarity with Angular, TypeScript, Node.js, MySQL, and AWS platforms, alongside a solid understanding of microservices architecture.
- Framework Agnostic Quality: High-calibre engineering fundamentals and a versatilemindset, prioritizing strong core coding standards and the adaptability to master newtechnologies over specific framework experience.
