Overview

As an Associate Structural Engineer at HDR, you lead design and project delivery within the Structures/Transportation group, ensuring technical quality and profitability. You collaborate across disciplines to coordinate designs that meet briefs, deadlines, and safety standards. This role supports HDR’s mission to shape sustainable, resilient transportation systems and communities. You drive client relationships, bids, and team development while advancing innovative structural solutions. You will contribute to impactful projects that move people and goods safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design, management and supervision of project delivery, defining client brief, scope, cost plan and deliverables
  • Carry out projects from concept to detailed design, tender, on-site supervision, and completion within design briefs and deadlines
  • Coordinate design teams to produce technically compliant, high-quality, cohesive outputs
  • Ensure all designs and reports meet a consistent standard of quality and regulatory compliance
  • Maintain QA processes and in-house design reviews and checks
  • Implement and manage health and safety, and ensure CDM regulations are addressed
  • Monitor project progress, design variations and financial budgets
  • Lead resource monitoring for each project and maintain client relationships to secure repeat business
  • Pursue new business opportunities and lead bids, proposals, and tender responses
  • Motivate and develop staff, set objectives, and foster high-performing teams
  • Familiarity with various Engineering Conditions of Contract and uphold professional indemnity standards

Key requirements

  • Degree-qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Chartered or working towards Chartership (IStructE or ICE preferred)
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in design consultancy with leadership of structural projects across aviation, highway/roads, rail/transit, and maritime
  • Strong knowledge of UK design standards and regulations
  • Understanding of CDM Regulations 2015 and roles of Designer and Principal Designer
  • Proficiency in Tekla, Tedds, ETABS, Robot, Revit
  • Experience leading client bids and proposals, including financial planning and contracts
  • Knowledge of public sector frameworks is a plus
  • Commercial awareness and project financial management
