Engineering Manager – Railway Engineering Services

Overview

As Engineering Manager in WSP’s Rail Engineering Services, you will lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver complex railway projects across the UK and abroad. You will manage client relationships and shape delivery through safety culture, design coordination, and assurance outputs. You will mentor future engineering managers and collaborate with Project and Design Managers to ensure technical excellence. This role offers exposure to landmark infrastructure work within a global firm and opportunities to influence digitalisation and delivery practices.

Responsibilities

• Lead, direct, and coordinate multi-disciplinary technical teams; resolve complex technical problems
• Manage client and stakeholder relationships to achieve project outcomes
• Set an example for health, safety and welfare on projects and instill a strong safety culture
• Lead development and management of client requirements and assurance outputs (assumptions and departures)
• Lead design coordination activities (integrated design reviews) and promote digitalisation to aid delivery
• Work with Project and Design Managers to ensure technical delivery of Rail projects
• Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to aspiring engineering managers

Key requirements

• Track record delivering multi-disciplinary projects as an Engineering Manager
• Engineering specialism and experience in railway engineering design
• Strong experience across at least one area of the full project lifecycle (feasibility to detailed design)
• Strong understanding of CSM, CDM and safety regulations and safe-by-design practices
• Ability to manage multiple workstreams and teams, prioritise and make delivery judgements
• Technical knowledge to challenge project outputs/deliverables
• Experience in roles with engineering responsibilities (CEM, CRE, DPE or PE)
• Chartered or incorporated registration with a relevant professional engineering institution
• Understanding of client engineering assurance processes
• Understanding of railway standards
