Overview

In this senior role within WSP’s Development team, you provide strategic direction, technical leadership and business growth for major infrastructure developments in the UK, with a focus on Basingstoke and the Southwest to Southeast region. You’ll work cross-functionally to share market intelligence, drive bids, and embed innovation while nurturing a diverse, high-performing team. The role centers on client engagement, long-term planning and shaping major commissions. You’ll influence safety, quality and sustainability as part of project leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction and visible leadership across the Development discipline
  • Lead coordination and share best practice with internal teams, promoting innovation
  • Drive local business development and build relationships with decision makers
  • Lead or contribute to bids, ensuring commercial and technical value in submissions
  • Act as Project Manager or Director for major projects and strategic commissions
  • Oversee SHEQ compliance and safety culture within the team
  • Mentor colleagues through Succession Planning and Emerging Talent initiatives
  • Engage with Technical Leadership Group to promote technical advancements in infrastructure development
  • Contribute to defining local team structures, shapes and skill sets
  • Support the regional director in delivering growth and diversification of staff and revenue
  • Deliver multi-disciplinary technical outputs across civil design, utilities, drainage and planning advice
  • Promote collaboration with public and private sector stakeholders to deliver sustainable development
  • Represent the team in client-facing activities and act as a catalyst for change
  • Lead and participate in workshops, training, and knowledge sharing

Key requirements

  • Degree level qualification in civil engineering
  • Chartered status or working towards chartership
  • Broad range of project experience across civil design for developments
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and management abilities
  • Commercial and strategic capability with a track record in identifying and delivering new business
  • Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to coach, motivate and drive a collaborative culture
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; capable of leading workshops and training
  • Ability to reason logically and solve problems in ambiguous situations
