Lead / Principal Cable Design Engineer

Overview

In this role you will lead the technical delivery of HV transmission cable designs, guiding best practices across HVAC and HVDC projects. You will manage design teams, oversee full lifecycle development from concept to approval, and drive innovation while ensuring compliance with IEC, IEEE, and National Grid standards. You’ll mentor engineers, support tendering, and champion continuous improvement. This position offers impact across major grid projects and opportunities to shape industry practice.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership for HV and EHV cable design across AC/DC, overhead, and underground systems
• Define and enforce best-practice design standards for HVAC and HVDC projects
• Oversee detailed designs and lifecycle delivery; approve designs
• Drive continuous improvement and lead rigorous technical reviews
• Mentor and develop junior engineers; lead design teams
• Support tendering with technical input and cost-optimisation strategies
• Lead new technology initiatives and contribute to industry forums
• Represent the organization in key industry engagements

Key requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering; Chartered Engineer status essential
• HV/EHV transmission cable design experience
• Proven track record leading engineering teams on large-scale projects
• Strong knowledge of IEC, IEEE, and related standards
• Proficiency in advanced design software (CDEGS, CYMCAP, COMSOL, AutoCAD or equivalent)
• Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management
• National Grid experience preferred
