Overview
In this senior role you lead fire protection system design within Arup’s Buildings team, collaborating with multi-disciplinary designers to deliver technically sound, code-compliant solutions. You’ll drive design decisions for fire suppression, detection and smoke control on high-profile, mission-critical projects. You’ll mentor engineers, share knowledge, and help grow the team’s capabilities in science, healthcare, data centres and industrial facilities. Responsibilities
- Lead design and delivery of fire protection services on complex projects, both standalone and integrated with other systems
- Interface with multi-disciplinary design teams and Architects to balance aesthetics and code-compliance
- Translate client requirements into clear project delivery plans and communicate with stakeholders
- Support the development of a high-performing team through knowledge sharing and mentoring
- Deliver fire protection on science and mission-critical environments (healthcare, data centres, industrial facilities) and advance technical capabilities
- Conduct design reviews and provide guidance to junior engineers
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of sector-specific legislation, codes, and standards (British/European, NFPA, Factory Mutual)
- Oversee safety, quality and timely delivery, managing multiple projects and priorities
Key requirements
- Degree in Engineering, Building Services, or related field with Chartered Engineer status (or near chartership)
- Proven track record delivering fire protection system design from concept to contract issue
- Experience managing multiple projects with tight deadlines
- Strong understanding of health and safety regulations (CDM) and risk assessment processes
- Experience in risk assessments (DSEAR, HAZID, HAZOP) and related risk analysis
- Understanding of BIM and proficiency with Revit or similar modelling software
- Project and team management skills including mentoring and financial oversight
- Knowledge of industry standards (British/European, NFPA, Factory Mutual)
