Design Engineer

Overview

As Power Grids Development Engineer, you will design, develop and qualify energy cables for the Wrexham plant. You will drive end-to-end R&D, from material selection to product approvals and sample testing, ensuring cost-effective, sustainable designs that meet customer specs. You will manage design and qualification processes, support customer inquiries, and lead material substitutions to reduce environmental impact. This role sits at the intersection of R&D, manufacturing, and supplier collaboration to deliver innovative power grid solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and test energy cables to meet specifications and customer needs at the Wrexham site.
• Manage design, development and qualification workflows using the Accolade project management system.
• Provide technical support for customer enquiries and contracts.
• Oversee design changes and their impact on products.
• Drive product cost reduction (DTC) and approve alternative materials with raw material specs.
• Own Technical Instructions within the Wrexham plant.
• Plan and execute sample testing for R&D and product qualification.
• Evaluate and introduce sustainable materials and new suppliers to reduce environmental footprint.

Key requirements

• Engineering degree or equivalent
• Strong numeracy, accuracy and attention to detail
• Problem solving, tenacity and ability to work independently or in a team
• Product knowledge of materials and cable manufacturing is advantageous with training provided
• MS Office proficiency; SAP experience advantageous with training provided
• Customer- and service-focused with ability to communicate at all levels
