Mechanical Design Engineer (Automotive Components)

Overview

In this role you will translate concepts into precision automotive components from prototype to production, ensuring quality, cost and delivery targets. You will work closely with design, manufacturing and suppliers to validate feasibility and drive successful NPI. You’ll shape manufacturing processes and documentation to support ramp-up and continuous improvement in an OE-focused environment. This is a hands-on design and release role at a manufacturing company pushing cutting-edge automotive technologies.

Responsibilities

• Develop CAD concepts using CATIA V5 (surface, solid, 2D) from customer data and packaging constraints
• Provide design and manufacturing input to assess feasibility, cost, and capability; coordinate with internal teams and suppliers
• Lead design feasibility reviews and ensure compliance with customer and internal standards
• Create detailed CAD models for prototypes and approval
• Create and update the Manufacturing Feasibility Report (MFR) throughout the project
• Develop and validate process flows, PFMEA, Control Plans, and SOPs for pre-production
• Manage prototype builds, liaising with suppliers, tooling teams, and manufacturing
• Oversee finalisation of designs for production release with proper GD&T and tolerance stack-ups
• Support production ramp-up and drive continuous improvement initiatives

Key requirements

• Experience as Mechanical Design Engineer or similar in engineering design and manufacturing
• Experience in New Product Introduction (NPI) and process development
• CATIA V5 proficiency for 3D modelling and 2D drawings
• Strong GD&T knowledge, datum structures, and manufacturing processes
• Degree or HND in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Production Engineering
• Familiarity with APQP, PFMEA, Control Plans, and Lean methods
• Experience in automotive (Tier 1 or OEM) environments
• Knowledge of IATF 16949 and related quality management systems
• Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects
