Associate Director, Structural Engineer – Water

Overview

In this role you will lead complex reinforced concrete structural design for water infrastructure, guiding multidisciplinary teams and shaping Scotland’s water sector. You’ll translate engineering decisions into outcomes for major programmes, including SR27, while driving technical excellence and safe delivery. You’ll mentor engineers, influence projects commercially, and partner with clients to deliver high-impact water solutions.

Responsibilities

• Lead the structural design delivery of complex reinforced concrete water infrastructure projects
• Act as technical authority for structural decisions across multidisciplinary teams
• Oversee design outputs for quality, compliance and technical excellence
• Manage structural design packages from concept to detailed design and construction support
• Ensure delivery safety, efficiency, and alignment with programme and commercial constraints
• Coordinate with civil, mechanical, process and geotechnical disciplines
• Support project directors and programme managers in client delivery activities
• Build trusted relationships with clients and delivery partners
• Lead technical discussions, workshops and design reviews with stakeholders
• Support bids, proposals and technical work winning activities
• Identify opportunities to improve project outcomes through innovation and engineering efficiency
• Mentor and develop Senior and Principal Engineers within the structural team
• Support technical capability growth and knowledge sharing across the business
• Help shape a high-performance engineering culture focused on technical excellence and accountability
• Champion a safety-first design culture aligned with Safety, Ethics and Quality principles
• Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, codes and quality procedures
• Drive engineering assurance and design risk management throughout project delivery
• Current and Upcoming Projects include: Scottish Water SR27 Enterprise Programme and major water infrastructure initiatives

Key requirements

• BEng or MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering
• Chartered Engineer (MICE and/or MIStructE)
• Significant experience delivering reinforced concrete and structural steelwork design (within water sector or other highly regulated infrastructure)
• Extensive and broad structural design experience
• Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and managing technical delivery
• Ability to communicate complex engineering decisions clearly to clients and stakeholders
