Principal Electrical Design Engineer (Building Services)

Overview

As Principal Electrical Engineer, you will lead electrical design for new build and refurbishment projects in private, public, and industrial sectors. You will act as lead consultant or team member, shaping proposals and coordinating tender documentation, while mentoring technical staff. You’ll manage project scope, timing, and quality, and stay updated on new methods and technologies. This role offers impact across projects and the Leeds office within a growing UK building services group.

Responsibilities

• Prepare project specifications and design deliverables for new builds and refurbishments
• Review sub-contractor designs and integrate them into the overall solution
• Develop and present design proposals to clients to meet requirements as lead or team member
• Issue tender documentation and assess contractor proposals to meet project needs
• Undertake project management as defined by the client when acting as lead consultant
• Guide and develop technical subordinates to participate effectively in teams
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of new techniques through CPD and industry reading

Key requirements

• 8+ years of building services experience
• Degree qualified in electrical or building services engineering
• Experience mentoring and leading project teams
• Experience taking financial, technical, quality and environmental responsibility for projects
• AutoCAD 2D, Amtech, Relux and Microsoft Office proficiency
• Enthusiastic and ambitious
• Excellent communication skills including report writing and presentations
• Ability to lead electrical elements of large projects or a portfolio of smaller projects
