Overview
In this role you will lead the design and engineering of nuclear-grade ventilation systems within the Adelaide Building Engineering team for complex, safety-significant projects in a highly regulated environment. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and provide technical leadership through the project lifecycle. You will perform airflow modelling, contamination control assessments, and support safety cases and verification activities. You will engage with clients, regulators, and suppliers to shape safe, compliant systems that enable project success.

Responsibilities
- Lead design and engineering of nuclear and safety-significant ventilation systems (HVAC, air handling, filtration, ductwork, related plant)
- Develop and review technical specifications, calculations, equipment schedules, and design documentation across concept to detailed design
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate ventilation into the wider facility design
- Conduct engineering studies, airflow modelling, contamination control and hazard/risk assessments
- Support safety cases, engineering justifications, requirements management, verification and validation for safety-significant ventilation and containment
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers/designers; manage scope, programme, resources, and deliverables
- Support commissioning, testing, balancing, containment verification, performance acceptance; engage with clients, stakeholders, suppliers and regulators
Key requirements
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with proven experience in ventilation/HVAC on major infrastructure or highly regulated projects
- Experience in nuclear, defence, pharmaceutical, life sciences, laboratory, or other regulated environments; understanding of safety culture and regulatory requirements
- Strong understanding of HVAC/ventilation engineering, airflow management, containment and contamination control
- Experience with specialist ventilation systems (HEPA filtration, radiological or hazardous environments, fume/process exhaust, cleanrooms, laboratories, controlled environments, smoke management, emergency ventilation)
- Knowledge of safety-significant/safety-classified systems, hazard analysis, risk assessment, ALARP, and reliability/maintainability/inspection requirements
- Experience with ventilation controls and BMS integration, configuration management, V&V, procurement, vendor management, and FAT would be advantageous
- Strong communication and stakeholder management; ability to lead technically and work autonomously in cross-functional settings
- Chartered Engineer/CPEng status desirable; willingness to learn in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment
- Ability to meet AUKUS Clearance requirements
