Engineer (Highways, Development & Infrastructure)

Overview

In this role you design highway and related infrastructure from feasibility through detailed design, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams on public and private sector schemes. You will ensure compliance with standards, obtain approvals, and support construction, shaping safe, coherent road networks. You’ll work within a supportive team culture that values excellence and empowerment, contributing to sustainable urban mobility. This is a hands-on role with a clear impact on project delivery and quality.

Responsibilities

• Prepare preliminary through to detailed designs for road, drainage and active travel infrastructure
• Produce designs compliant with standards (DMRB, MCHW, MfS, TSM, Local Authority guides)
• Obtain statutory approvals for projects
• Provide design support during construction
• Prepare technical outputs and coordinate with other disciplines
• Manage, delegate to and direct Graduate Engineers and Technicians on projects
• Deliver tasks to quality, time and budget
• Present information clearly and coordinate with project teams for fully coordinated designs
• Assist with delivery of technical outputs (drawings, specifications, cost estimates, contract documents, technical reports)
• Promote a culture of excellence, collaboration, respect, and empowerment within the team

Key requirements

• Experience in preliminary through detailed design for road, drainage and active travel infrastructure
• Familiarity with design standards (DMRB, MCHW, MfS, TSM, Local Authority guides)
• Ability to obtain statutory approvals
• Ability to coordinate with multiple disciplines and stakeholders
• Experience supervising Graduate Engineers and Technicians
• Strong focus on delivering high-quality outputs on time and within budget
• Strong communication and documentation skills
• Ability to liaise with project teams and construction professionals to ensure fully coordinated designs
