Principal Mechanical Engineer

Overview

As Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will lead a broad range of mechanical engineering services across multiple sectors and play a key role in project delivery and client engagement. You will work closely with senior leadership to ensure high technical standards, on-time and on-budget delivery, and mentorship of junior staff. You will also contribute to fee-earning design work, feasibility studies, and the development of the practice’s client base. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with people management and business development in a growing consultancy.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Engineering Associate/Director and provide weekly progress updates
• Deliver projects to high technical standards, on time and within budget
• Support and mentor junior staff with technical queries
• Engage in fee-earning design work requiring high-level expertise
• Conduct feasibility studies as needed
• Meet clients to define project briefs and budget
• Draw up specifications and drawings aligned with briefs
• Review tenders and prepare tender reports and recommendations
• Project-manage site works from start to finish
• Agree with contractors on final accounts against specifications
• Conduct inspections of existing installations and prepare condition reports
• Prepare information for monthly invoicing
• Manage day-to-day workload of reporting staff and maintain team wellbeing
• Advise directors on resource requirements and assist at interview stage
• Develop the client base by pursuing marketing opportunities and initiatives
