Overview

As a Principal Rail Traction Power / Substation Engineer, you lead technically complex traction power and HV substation designs for rail projects across the UK and internationally. You act as CRE/Lead Engineer, ensuring deliverables meet standards, are constructible, and cost-effective. You collaborate with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to drive design quality, governance, and client satisfaction. This role combines technical leadership with business delivery to advance electrification initiatives at scale.

Responsibilities

• Act as CRE / Lead Engineer with full accountability for technical delivery and design approval
• Lead delivery of complex traction power and substation design packages across project stages
• Develop and review concept and detailed design documentation (calculations, reports, specifications)
• Oversee design assurance and governance across projects
• Collaborate with Project Managers and multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated delivery
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship within the team
• Engage with clients and stakeholders to align on requirements and expectations
• Undertake site visits and surveys to inform design development and resolve issues
• Support bids and proposals with technical input

Key requirements

• Significant experience in traction power and high voltage substation design
• Experience acting as CRE / Lead Engineer
• Experience delivering complex projects across feasibility, outline and detailed design
• Experience leading multidisciplinary coordination and overseeing design teams
• Chartered status, or working towards chartership, or demonstrated principal-level experience
• Low voltage experience desirable but not essential
